It happens every once in a while that our clients encounter problems with the law. Normally, due to their past trauma, they tend to get really nervous when a police officer talks to them. From the officer's perspective, when someone is incoherent and visibly nervous, they are likely to be doing something illegal so they are questioned further and often arrested.
One of our clients was recently arrested due to the fact his visa expired, and he was sent to jail for a few months. Normally, this is a horrifying experience because it brings back all of their memories of being detained and tortured elsewhere.
Surprisingly, he thoroughly enjoyed the experience. He encountered an American prison much better than the prisons he encountered in Russia. He talked about how great it was that we even heat our prisons.
His English improved during his incarceration, his symptoms improved, and he gave us this great quote:
"American prisons are like Russian camping."
Have a great week everyone.
